California's new turf rules

Ready for AB 1572

California's AB 1572 stops properties from watering decorative, non-functional turf with drinking water. The smartest path is usually to work with what you already have: keep watering the turf people actually use, stop drinking-water irrigation on purely decorative areas, and protect your trees. CME makes the irrigation adjustments and keeps your whole property maintained, with no major construction project.

AB 1572 questions

Common questions about AB 1572

Do we have to remove our lawn?

No. AB 1572 only stops watering decorative turf with drinking water. It doesn't require removing it. We help you keep the turf people use, adjust irrigation on the decorative areas and keep the rest of your landscape healthy.

How can we comply without a big project?

Start with what you have. Turf that is actually used for recreation or gatherings is functional, and you can keep watering it. On decorative areas, we cap or reroute sprinkler zones, add drip irrigation to protect trees and fine-tune your controllers so the whole property uses less water.

Which of our lawns count as non-functional?

Non-functional turf is decorative grass that isn't used for recreation or gatherings, like strips around parking lots, medians and frontage lawns. A good rule of thumb: if the only time people walk on it is to mow it, it's likely non-functional. We'll walk your property and map it for you.

When does our property have to comply?

State and local government properties by January 1, 2027. Commercial, industrial and institutional properties by January 1, 2028. HOA common areas, mobile home parks and retirement communities by January 1, 2029. Local government properties in disadvantaged communities by January 1, 2031, or sooner if state funding becomes available.

Do we have to report compliance?

Yes, for larger sites. Commercial, industrial and institutional properties with more than 5,000 square feet of irrigated area must self-certify compliance to the State Water Resources Control Board every three years, starting June 30, 2030 (June 30, 2031 for HOA common areas). We document your property with photos and maps so you're ready.

What happens to our trees when the lawn watering stops?

Established trees often rely on the lawn's sprinklers. Before turf irrigation is turned off, we add drip irrigation to keep your trees healthy.

Who keeps the property looking good afterward?

We do. Our recurring maintenance covers mowing the functional turf, shrub and tree care, bed and weed control, and regular irrigation and controller checks so your property stays compliant and looks cared for.
